With millions of people under lockdown and being stuck at home indefinitely, in the grand scheme of things, staying put is a small sacrifice to make for preventing the virus from spreading. Turning the situation into a positive one is simply a matter of mindset, and there are plenty of ways you can make the most of your time. From getting your DIY groove on to camping out under the stars, I’ve got you covered. Here are my top tips for keeping boredom at bay.
Top tips for overcoming the COVID-19 lockdown
1- Camping, well, sort of…
With overseas family holidays a distant memory for now, why not take everyone camping!! Pitch a tent in the backyard and get outside. It may not be the great outdoors, but there’s no stopping you from cooking up some marshmallows and sitting out under the stars. The kids will love it and weather permitting you’ll break up the monotony of staring at the four walls.
2- DIY Stuff
That hole the kids made in the dining room wall, fix it!! The splashes of paint the kids spread all over your beautiful wooden floor, clean it!! That squeaky kitchen cabinet door, Oil it!! Take the time to tackle some home improvements and get around to those pesky jobs you’ve been putting off forever.
3- Get Physical
Lying idle at home for any sustained period is never a good idea; the weighing scales will start tipping in the wrong direction. To stay healthy, eat good food, and an exercise routine is a must. Pick a room in the house, any room and transform into your new gym. Get your circuits going, squats, burpees and press-ups while finishing up with some stretching. Doing this at least three times a week will keep your waistline in check.
4- Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, whichever…
Slouch back on the couch, kick your shoes off and browse through the endless catalogue of films and TV shows on offer. Finish that series, watch that cheesy film, be a couch potato and be proud. Figuring out what to watch can be a little overwhelming with so much choice, so here’s my top 5 picks: 1. Narcos (Netflix). 2. Mindhunter (Netflix) 3. Kingdom (Netflix) 4. The Boys (Amazon) 5. The Wire (HBO)
5- Friday Night Drinks
Missing nights out down the local? Sure, you might not be able to head down the pub, but with the magic of technology, a few drinks with friends and a good chin wag can all be done via video chat in the comfort of your own home. There’s plenty of great video conferencing tools online, and a quick google search will throw up the best ones. Get the booze out, the glad rags on, send out the digital invite, and you’re good to go.
6- Check-in with the Family
Being stuck at home can be challenging, but for grandparents and those family members living on their own, being isolated can be pretty tough going. Check-in as often as possible, a quick call, a simple WhatsApp message, anything to let them know you’re thinking of them. It’s important to provide some extra support during these uncertain times and help them through the lockdown.
