Cork Oak Mansion

Cork Oak Mansion is a small collection of contemporary villas designed by Fran Silvestre Arquitectos, the Valencian studio known for its white, sculptural houses. The first villas were built in Altos de Valderrama, a gated area of cork oak woodland next to Real Club Valderrama, and the collection now also includes homes in La Reserva de Sotogrande and La Zagaleta in Benahavís.

Each setting has its own appeal. Altos de Valderrama is one of the quietest corners of Sotogrande, with 24-hour security, old cork oaks and olive trees, and the famous Valderrama course on the doorstep. La Reserva offers golf and sea views, private security and access to the resort’s beach club and sports facilities. La Zagaleta, further east, is one of the most private residential estates in Europe.

The architecture is what first catches the eye. Fran Silvestre’s studio has won a long list of international design awards, and its houses are built around light, clean lines and a strong connection with the landscape. Large sliding glass walls open the living areas onto terraces and pools, and the houses are placed carefully on each plot. At Villa Oak, for example, the design keeps 39 of the existing trees.

What really makes these houses different, though, is energy. They are designed to produce the energy they use over the year, through geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels and battery storage. For a house of this size, that makes a real difference to running costs, and it’s something very few luxury homes on the coast can offer.

These are large family homes, most with six to eight bedrooms, indoor and outdoor pools, a private spa and gym, a cinema, a wine cellar and garaging for several cars. Sotogrande International School is only a few minutes away by car, which matters to many of the families who look at these villas. Four villas in the collection have already been sold.
